Mike was my first taste of Iyengar Yoga. Way back in 1995. I had a baby daughter who is now 32. I used to attend his Saturday morning classes at Kelmarna Ave. A beautiful studio in Herne Bay with lovely brick walls and loads of natural light. The classes back then were 2 hours long. so it was a real commitment from me with a little baby at home, to attend. We used to do long holds in the asanas, all with our individual watches timing ourselves, 5 minutes each side. It was full on.
He was a hard task master and did not suffer fools! You could see that he lived and breathed his yoga. Mike ignited in me my own passion for the practice. And here I am all these years later still getting on the mat every day and the Director of my own school, Stephanie Hall Yoga in Milford. I also was a Director at the Albany Yoga Room from 2000 to 2008. The faces I remember back then in his school have also gone on to have there own studios. . He was the one and only Iyengar school in Auckland back then and now there are dozens. With the global phenomenon of Yoga there is a studio on every corner. Unfortunately for the uneducated novice coming to yoga for the first time most of the teachers are poorly trained. If there was one thing about Mike , he knew his craft. Years of dedicated practice and study. When I got pregnant with my second child, he saw me safely through the pregnancy , I was practicing right up until I had my son. He never let me get away with anything and was definitely not a light touch. But I was incredibly strong and recovered quickly. So I am grateful to Mike, he wasn’t an easy man to be taught by, but if it was easy I probably wouldn’t still be practicing now. So Thank you Mike . With Blessings and Gratitude. Stephanie
